Volvo S60 gets new trims and 39g/km plug-in hybrid

Volvo has updated its S60 saloon line-up with a new 390hp T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain along with new trim levels.

The Volvo S60 range has been updated with new trims and a plug-in hybrid variant

Available to order now, the new powertrain joins the existing 250hp T5 petrol that debuted with the new range in the spring and combines a 303hp petrol engine with an 87hp electric motor, giving a total output of 390hp, and married up to an eight-speed auto and all-wheel drive.

The T8 Twin Engine’s 11.8kWh battery provides an electric-only range of up to 36 miles, with CO2 emissions from 39g/km. WLTP combined fuel economy is up to 176.5mpg. 0-62mph time is 4.6 seconds.

The new powertrain is available exclusively in R-Design Plus trim and is priced at £49,805 on the road, bringing a £265 monthly company car tax bill for a 40% taxpayer.

The plug-in hybrid has been added to the range as Volvo replaces the R-Design Edition launch trim previously used for the existing T5 petrol engine with the new R-Design Plus grade while also adding a new Inscription Plus variant.

R-Design Plus is designed to provide a more focused driving experience, thanks to (on T5 versions) stiffer springs, faster-responding monotube dampers, thicker anti-roll bars and a 12mm lower ride height (petrol-electric hybrid R-Design Plus variants come with the standard suspension settings). Other R-Design Plus highlights include a head-up display, gearshift paddles, high-¬gloss black exterior trim elements, a choice of 18-¬, 19-¬ or 20-inch alloy wheels, Metal Mesh aluminium interior inlays and part-leather sports seats.

The Inscription Plus brings a luxury focus including Nappa leather upholstery for the heated seats – which also gain a cooling function – plus bespoke alloys and Driftwood interior inlays.

The R-Design Plus places emphasis on dynamic style and cutting-edge technology, with high-gloss black exterior trim, sports seats, steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles, a head-up display, part-leather sports seats and a choice of 18, 19 or 20-inch alloys.

T5 R-Design Plus versions also get lower, stiffer suspension settings compared to the comfort-focused suspension used for the T8 Twin Engine R-Design Plus and T5 Inscription Plus while the latter models can also be fitted with the adaptive dampers in the optional Active Four-C Chassis.

Standard equipment includes touchscreen and voice-activated control system, adaptive LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, hands-free boot opening, sat-nav and Volvo’s City Safety autonomous emergency braking system.

Commenting on the S60 range expansion, Matt Galvin, Sales Director of Volvo Car UK, said: “The S60’s spring launch couldn’t have gone better. The high-specification R-Design Edition variants were extremely well received by both customers and retailers. Now, with R-Design Plus and Inscription Plus, we can offer the choice of a more focused driving experience or something more luxurious – qualities that resonate strongly with private owners and business users in the premium mid-size saloon market.

“Add the petrol-electric plug-in hybrid T8 Twin Engine to the mix and we’re sure the extended S60 range will make a significant contribution to Volvo Car UK’s continued sales success.”

Prices for the S60 range start at £37,935 on the road for the T5 R-Design Plus.

Volvo will also shortly announce full details of a 405hp S60 T8 Polestar Engineered variant.
