London Mayor calls on carmakers to compensate for diesels

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is urging carmakers to pledge funds towards measures to help clear up air pollution in the capital.

UK Government ‘flouting its duty’ on air quality, finds UN report

The mayor is calling on vehicle makers to contribute to the air quality fund.

The mayor has written to UK chiefs at BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, calling on them to contribute towards London’s air quality fund, which supports new projects by London boroughs to improve air quality.

Khan is also urging the government to secure contributions from vehicle manufacturers on the same scale as the £24bn received from Volkswagen in the US and £223m from German car manufacturers in Germany.

The call comes on the same day as the premiere of a new film about the public health crisis of air pollution. Produced by Lark Rise Pictures, the eight-minute film, dubbed AIR, explores the air quality crisis in the capital and explores solutions. For more of the latest industry news, click here.
