No details have been released yet although the saloon, which replaces the current S80, is set to be based on the SPA architecture used for the new XC90, which will also be used for all future Volvo models from the S60 upwards. The S90 is also set to feature exterior and interior styling elements from the XC90 and is likely to offer the same engine line-up.

The new saloon was revealed by the carmaker as part of an announcement that it is to develop next-generation automotive technologies with Microsoft.

The two companies today revealed how Microsoft HoloLens, the world’s first fully untethered holographic computer, might be used in future to redefine how customers first encounter and explore a car, as well as how cars might be bought and sold in future.

Volvo added that future areas of future collaboration between the two companies could include autonomous driving technologies and the utilisation of data generated from connected cars to create new services.

The global reveal of the S90 takes place on Wednesday 2 December.
