Vauxhall has uncovered its new Grandland flagship SUV, reinvented with new design, extra space and the arrival of a fully electric option.

Due in UK showrooms this autumn, the second-generation model becomes the first Vauxhall to use the new STLA Medium ‘BEV-by-Design’ platform from parent group Stellantis, also the basis for the new Peugeot E-5008.

The new underpinnings deliver extra space and the latest Grandland gets an extra 173mm of length, 19mm of height and 64mm of width compared to its predecessor, positioning it clearly at the top of Vauxhall’s SUV portfolio, above the recently revealed Frontera.

The long wheelbase of 2,784mm enables increased roominess in the cabin and boot. Rear passengers get 20mm of additional legroom while the boot now delivers 550 litres of space – an increase of 36 litres over the outgoing model. This increases to 1,641 litres with the 40:20:40 folding rear seats folded down.

The new architecture also enables the arrival of the model’s first-ever fully electric variant, cementing Vauxhall’s promise that all its cars and vans will be available with a fully electric version by the end of 2024.

This uses a new flat battery packaging design that will allow for a 98kWh battery, along with energy-saving features such as the heat pump, potentially giving up to 435 miles of range (WLTP provisional).

Drivers can choose from three levels of regenerative braking using the steering wheel paddles, while the battery can be recharged to 80% in around only 26 minutes at a rapid charger. Two other motor and battery combinations are also expected to be available.

For those seeking a stepping stone to full electrification, the new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid will offer up to 53 miles of electric range (WLTP provisional) while the entry-level model will be a mild hybrid petrol combining a 28hp electric motor with a 136hp 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a new six-speed dual clutch transmission.

Not only is the new-generation Grandland bigger than its predecessor but it’s also bolder, bringing many design features from the Vauxhall Experimental Concept to life for the first time on a production model. These include the 3D Vizor front-end with central illuminated Griffin logo and the permanently illuminated ‘Vauxhall’ badging at the rear, plus a two-tone floating roof and contrast cladding and up to 20-inch alloy wheels.

It also debuts Vauxhall’s new Intelli-Lux Pixel HD lighting system with over 50,000 individual elements for high-definition light distribution.

The roomy interior comes with a 16-inch central display, optional Intelli-HUD head-up display, and new Intelli-Seat front seats, approved by Germany’s AGR campaign, along with ‘greenovations’ such as interior fabric from recycled PET products and the removal of chrome detailing.

The cabin also delivers more than 35 litres of interior storage compartments, including a new semi-transparent ‘Pixel Box’.

The all-new Vauxhall Grandland will open for orders in July. Prices, full specs and trim details will be announced closer to the launch.
