A weekend away sees the Touareg show its practical side, says Julian Kirk.

The ability to slide the seat bench all the way forwards still leaves plenty of legroom

Sometimes it’s not the fancy optional extras that make a big difference on a car, it’s the prosaic standard stuff which, when done well, gives you satisfaction.

Take the Touareg’s standard sliding rear seat bench. Doesn’t sound very exciting, but it makes a huge difference when we go away on a family holiday. With two small children we can slide the seat bench all the way forward, which still gives them plenty of legroom. This then liberates an extra six inches of load floor – essential when Mrs Kirk insists on packing half the contents of our house when we go away for a long weekend in Norfolk.
