Rupert Pontin, chief car editor at Glass’s, said: ‘It’s a really interesting scenario facing the used car sector this year. There is no doubt about the fact that seasonality has a major impact on car sales, and so we would normally have expected a surge in convertibles early in the summer months – but we’re still not seeing it. Four of the quickest selling cars are 4x4s, which is odd bearing in mind the time of year – it would seem cars selling competitively at auction are being retailed at low prices to keep stock turning.

‘Looking at the rest of the top ten, there are no major surprises. Insignia taking fifth place is a little unexpected, but it’s a good car and the new model has recently been launched, so market awareness will be quite high. And of course family cars are quite popular during summer months, so the FRV, Berlingo and Tucson making the top ten is a reflection of this.’

Moving to the worst performers, and despite the good weather, the MG TF convertible has been the slowest selling car of the past month, spending an average of 91.5 days on the forecourt.

Pontin continued: ‘I’m shocked to see a convertible at the bottom of the list. These are cheap summer fun cars, so I would expect the picture to look quite differently next month. It may be the simple case that cars that have been in stock for a long time are only just starting to sell.

‘As always, only time will tell – but I would be hugely surprised if the swell in temperatures doesn’t have a major impact on next month’s selling trends.’
