The hatchback’s biggest visual upgrade is a move to all-LED headlights across the range and a redesigned grille, both matching the XC90, S90 and V90, while trim levels follow the familiar Momentum, Inscription, R-Design and Cross Country structure.

All diesel versions emit less than 100g/km, including the most powerful 188bhp D4, when equipped with a manual gearbox. The entry-level D2, which produces 118bhp, now emits 89g/km and returns 83.0mpg across all trim levels, apart from the Cross Country at 96g/km and 76.3mpg.

The Volvo On Call app is also significantly upgraded, and can now send location information from the user’s calendar to the car’s navigation system, as well as enabling a fleet of up to ten cars to be managed on a single device.

Nick Connor, managing director of Volvo Car UK, said: “The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in the UK, making it a vital car for the company. With the updates for Model Year 2017, we’re making this already very successful model even more attractive to customers.”
