New research revealing that only a third (33%) of businesses monitor employee driver licences is now out from TTC Group.

Many companies may struggle to keep abreast of regular grey fleet checks and driver training

Its new white paper on ‘Managing grey fleet risk the easy way’ finds that businesses must urgently review their grey fleets to help reduce the risk associated with employees driving their own vehicles for work.

Alarmingly, even the most basic driver validation checks are currently being overlooked, according to TTC research, including for a valid MOT, insurance and tax. Results highlight that 18% of businesses never make these checks, 37% check when new employees join the business, and only 33% check these essentials regularly.

David Marsh, CEO at the training and compliance expert, said: “Resources are stretched for many businesses so it is understandable that even the most willing companies may struggle to keep abreast of regular checks and training. However, with approximately 14 million grey fleet drivers on UK roads, the absence of training, appropriate insurance and roadworthy vehicles is putting a significant number of road users at risk.

“Add to this the business risk associated with any collision, conviction, or driving ban and the knock-on impact of internal resources being stretched, and it is clear to see the pressing need for businesses to get on top of their grey fleets.”

Despite holes in many firms’ grey fleet management, the research also revealed that most businesses (51%) relying on grey fleet do invest in training for these drivers. There is room for improvement though, as a just under third of businesses (31%) help with training for vulnerable drivers or those who commit speeding, drink, or drug offences.

Marsh concluded: “We hope this white paper will help businesses to understand the obligations and challenges grey fleets present and provide some useful insight on how to eradicate the grey areas of grey fleets once and for all.”
