Replacing the 1.2 TSI, it’s the first time the Octavia has been offered with a three-cylinder engine, the 999cc unit producing 113bhp thanks to a turbocharger.

In the hatchback, this returns 62.8mpg and emits 104g/km CO2 with a six-speed manual gearbox, or 62.8mpg and 105g/km with the seven-speed DSG. Estate versions are slightly less efficient, at 62.8mpg for the manual and 61.4mpg for the DSG, or 105 and 106g/km respectively.

Buyers can also fit an aerodynamic package, comprising lower sports suspension, active air flaps and a rear spoiler, and low rolling resistance tyres. This further improves economy, to 64.2mpg, with 102g/km CO2 emissions.

The Octavia 1.0 TSI is available to order now, priced at £16,660 (on the road) for the hatchback and £17,880 for the estate.
