Michelin Connected Fleet is helping parent group Michelin tackle safety and emissions across its inhouse fleet, while also supporting the shift to electric vehicles.

The technology cut harsh driving events by 25% across the 54 vans operated by the Services and Solutions division

Already widely used by fleet operators across Europe, the connected fleet management solution was adopted by Michelin’s Services and Solutions division in the UK to support its drive for safety and sustainability.

In just six months, it cut harsh driving events by 25% across the 54 vans operated by the Services and Solutions division.

Analysis of data also shows the technology is improving driver behaviour after reducing speeding events by 46%, particularly in 30mph and 50mph zones, as well as cutting engine idling by 14%.

Combined, these changes in driving style have helped to improve fuel efficiency across the fleet by 5.8%, delivering a notable financial saving, whilst also lowering CO2 emissions by 5.6% per kilometre travelled.

Alastair Cameron, national operations manager – services and solutions at Michelin, said: “We knew Michelin Connected Fleet had a strong offer, but now we’re seeing it for ourselves in terms of saving fuel and reducing our own carbon footprint – plus we have cut maintenance costs on brakes, too.”

Thanks to the technology’s strong results, Michelin Connected Fleet has now been extended to 20 cars used by managers at the Services and Solutions division. A driver incentive scheme is also now in place, rewarding drivers for reducing harsh braking and acceleration via a monthly scoring system based on data collected.

“All our drivers and managers are engaged in the scheme and it’s really paying off. An app allows them to monitor their performance against colleagues and this competitive element is driving continuous improvement,” Cameron added.

Michelin Connected Fleet’s EV transition tools are also aiding the Services and Solutions division’s switch from diesel to electric. The team have already ordered 17 electric vans, specified with the solution’s forward- and rear-facing cameras, as part of ambitions to move the entire fleet to electric by 2026.

Gilson Santiago, CEO of Michelin Connected Fleet, said: “It’s fantastic to see our fleet management tools delivering so many great benefits for our colleagues. The partnership shows how we are perfectly aligned with the Michelin Group’s safety and environmental strategies, as well as its bold commitments to reduce CO2 emissions.”
