Volvo drops S90, XC40 PHEV and Cross Country estates

Volvo has axed the V60 Cross Country estate, V90 Cross Country estate, S90 saloon and XC40 Recharge PHEV crossover as it works to “consolidate” its line-up.

All S90 variants have been removed from the UK line-up

The four models have been retired from the range, due to both falling demand but also the carmaker’s plans for electrification.

However, the standard V90 and V60 estates remain on sale, along with the XC40 mild hybrid petrols and the fully electric XC40 Recharge SUV and C40 Recharge coupé crossover.

A Volvo spokesperson said: “We are rapidly transforming our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars. We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition. As a result, and based on existing orders and available production for the UK market, plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40 Recharge, along with all V60 Cross Country, V90 Cross Country and S90 variants have been removed from the UK line-up.”

Volvo set out its stall on electrification early, announcing back in March 2021 that it was working to become a fully electric car maker by 2030 and go fully online for sales.

Upcoming launches include the EX90 range-topping seven-seat SUV, due on sale next year as the replacement to the XC90, and the EX30 baby electric SUV.

Volvo’s latest sales data shows its fully electric cars were the main contributor to growth. Global sales of 60,398 cars in May were up 31% compared with the same month last year, while take-up of its fully electric cars rose 196% during the period.
