Volkswagen teases new estate-only Passat

Volkswagen has previewed its forthcoming Passat, ahead of its world premiere at the end of August.

The ninth-generation Passat launches in Q4 this year

Due to launch in Q4 this year, the ninth-generation model will only be sold as an estate – as with the current version after production of the saloon stopped in January 2022.

It’s built on a revamped version of the brand’s MQB Evo platform also being used for the new Tiguan and mechanically identical Škoda Superb, and will be larger than its predecessor. Some 140mm longer than before, it delivers increased legroom along with extra boot space, which rises by 40 litres to 690 litres (when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrests), and by 140 litres to 1920 litres with the rear bench seat folded down.

Engine line-up will continue with the current mix of turbo petrol and diesels, mild hybrid turbocharged petrol engines and plug-in hybrids – the latter offering increased electric-only ranges of up to 62 miles (100km). In addition, AC charging will be faster in all PHEV versions, and DC charging will also be possible as standard for the first time. The specific line-up for the UK is yet to be confirmed.

Volkswagen is also placing increased focus on extra comfort, including plusher materials and enhanced noise insulation. The Passat will also introduce new ergoActive seats, which come with electrical adjustment (up to 14-way, depending on model and equipment) as well as differently configured massage and air conditioning functions. New adaptive chassis control will also debut, plus an enhanced steering ratio.

Other features include a newly developed cockpit and new infotainment system for clearer operation, with a standard 12.9-inch display and a 15-inch screen as an option. The ninth iteration of the Passat will also come with a new generation of IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, giving enhanced visibility.

First launched in 1973, the Passat has sold more than 30 million units worldwide over the current eight generations.
