The heavily facelifted Volkswagen Touareg is now available to order in the UK, complete with updated design, new gadgets and an upgraded running gear.

The revamped line-up is priced from £67,640

The revamped line-up is priced from £67,640 to £80,370 and includes three grades and five variants from launch.

Key updates for the 2024 model include the arrival of newly developed IQ.Light HD matrix headlights, which use over 38,400 micro LEDs to project “an interactive carpet of light” into the lane of the premium SUV. There’s also lighting for cornering and poor weather, and an optional Night Vision assist system that detects people and animals using a thermal imaging camera and shows them on the cockpit and optional head-up display.

Lighting also figures in the exterior redesign and the updated front-end gains an illuminated horizontal strip in the radiator grille while the rear gets a new light bar and an illuminated red logo that marks a first for the brand. New 20-, 21- and 22-inch alloy wheels also debut.

Interior revisions include softer materials for the armrests and centre console panels and the latest ‘Innovision Cockpit’. This combines a 12-inch instrument display with a 15-inch central touchscreen for the infotainment. New features include lane-precise navigation and high-resolution HD map data. Voice control has also been further developed and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is now wireless.

Five powertrains are on offer, each using a 3.0-litre V6 unit. The line-up includes a 340hp turbo petrol, 231hp and 286hp turbo diesel engines and two plug-in hybrid models, including a 381hp entry PHEV and the top-rung 462hp PHEV, the latter with a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.  Both have an electric only range of 31 miles.

All engines are paired as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and come with 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive.

Three trim levels are on offer. The entry-level Elegance grade is reserved for the lower-powered PHEV, priced at £68,810.

All three diesels are solely available in the mid-level Black Edition while the flagship model is the Touareg R eHybrid with the 462hp PHEV, priced at £80,370 and including 22-inch diamond-turned wheel rims with blue brake calipers and a silver R logo. The R logo is also projected on to the road by the exterior mirrors.

Other changes include updated running gear, revamped for a greater spread between performance and comfort on all types of terrain. A roof load sensor works with the vehicle electronics and running gear for increased agility when carrying a roof box, and the all-wheel-drive Touareg includes active roll compensation and all-wheel steering.

Driver assistance tech includes Travel Assist (assisted driving up to a maximum speed), Area View (360-degree bird’s eye view shown in the infotainment display console to assist with manoeuvring), Park Assist Plus with remote parking capability, Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and the Night Vision system.
