Soaring pump prices prompt safer driving habits

Almost four out of 10 (38%) of drivers now drive more economically amid ever-rising fuel prices, potentially increasing safety on UK roads.

Some 38% of those surveyed said they’ve adopted smoother driving habits – equating to some 12.5 million drivers

IAM RoadSmart surveyed 1,004 motorists and found 72% said they had changed how they travel due to travel costs. Alongside the 38% who’ve adopted smoother driving habits – equating to some 12.5 million drivers – almost one in five (19%) or six million have taken extra care to stick to the speed limit.

The road safety charity said such actions could have an unexpected positive impact on the safety of Britain’s roads. Department for Transport data shows the devastating impact of driving too fast – the latest figures reveal exceeding the speed limit was a factor in 7% of all accidents, but of these accidents 17% were fatalities. In addition, exceeding the speed limit and travelling too fast for conditions were cited factors in 13% of all accidents, and these accidents accounted for 27% of all fatalities.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at IAM RoadSmart, said: “Driving slower and more economically will no doubt help keep the pain at the pumps down, but another positive impact of this is, of course, road safety. We would urge those who have adopted slower and smoother driving habits to maintain these habits, regardless of fuel prices. This way, motorists will not only save money on fuel and travel greener, but also potentially save lives.”
