Smart paves way for new #1 electric SUV with 100 Launch Editions

Smart has confirmed the timing and pre-ordering details for the Launch Edition version of its new #1 electric compact SUV.

Previewed last month, the #1 spearheads the carmaker’s plans to reposition as a leading design brand with an all-electric line-up and is the carmaker’s first production model to be revealed under joint Mercedes-Geely ownership. It’s intended to renew the brand through a combination of all-new design, impressive cabin space and state-of-the-art technology. 

It’ll arrive first with an exclusive 100 Launch Edition examples, which open for orders in December 2022 ahead of first deliveries in mid-2023. 

The Launch Edition closely mirrors the concept Smart #1 show car that was revealed in Munich last year and comes with unique signature design cues such as the exclusive white body and gold roof combo, a ‘Halo Roof’ with a chequered pattern and matching 19-inch alloys. The interior will also be marked out from the rest of the range with bespoke trim colours and a two-tone leather interior. 

As the halo model, the Launch Edition also gets a wealth of headline equipment, including matrix LED headlamps, 13-speaker Beats audio system, adaptive cruise control, fully automated parking system and wireless smartphone charging. 

A fully interconnected ecosystem links the vehicle with the smart app and the cloud, and a customisable user interface is supported by a bespoke environment for in-car apps, featuring an intelligent avatar with AI-based voice control. 

The electric powertrain uses a rear-mounted electric motor to provide 272hp of power and 343Nm of torque, powered by a 66kWh battery that gives 273 miles of range under the WLTP combined cycle (subject to certification). It can be charged at 150kW DC rapid charging, giving a 10% to 80% charge in under 30 minutes.
