Now in its second year, this unique event puts fleet drivers’ skills to the ultimate test. Those company car drivers that wish to compete need to register their interest before 31st December 2013.

Successful applicants will have their highway knowledge and driving style examined through a series of assessments. The top-ten drivers are then invited to take part in a set of highly skilled driving challenges held on the 9th April 2014 at Silverstone, the home of British motorsport.

The competition, organised by ALD Automotive in association with Fleet World and event partners Peak Performance and Toyota & Lexus Fleet Services, aims to find the UK’s best company car driver and promote smarter, safer driving.

The winner of the 2013 Fleet Driver of the Year was Paul Cook of Galliford Try, a leading housebuilding and construction group, who was handed the keys to drive a Lexus LFA supercar around Silverstone circuit.

Commenting on his experience of the competition, Paul said: 'It was fantastic to be involved and to have my driving recognised in this way. I really enjoyed the whole process and would definitely recommend it to others. During the driver monitoring stage I was conscious of driving more efficiently and safely. Over the month-long period I believe I saw a 20% increase in my fuel efficiency, creating significant cost savings for me, as well as the business.'

Mel Dawson, managing director for ALD Automotive, said: 'We devised the competition to focus the industry’s attention towards the affect drivers can have on fleet costs. Fleets may be funded in the most tax efficient way and use the most fuel efficient cars available, but when the keys are handed over, it’s driving behaviour that has the biggest influence on cost, risk and CO2 output. The competition, which will see the winner crowned at the Fleet World Show in April, will be great fun for those involved, but is geared towards raising awareness for both fleet managers and drivers alike.'

The competition is open to any Fleet Manager or Company Car Driver in the UK, including those with cars sourced through salary sacrifice or employee car ownership schemes.
