Range Rover Evoque updated with new tech and longer-range PHEV

The Range Rover Evoque has gained new technologies and an updated powertrain line-up in a model update for 2023.

Key changes include an overhaul of the cabin, which gets a new gear shifter for automatic transmission models, plus a floating 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen that gives full digital access to core vehicle functions such as climate control climate, seating and audio volume. Already seen on models including the Range Rover Velar and the Defender, it frees up cabin space, giving a more minimalist design. It’s also designed to reduce task and interaction time – some 80% of tasks can be performed within two taps of the home screen.

The new system features the latest Pivi Pro infotainment setup with built-in Amazon Alexa and over-the-air updates. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with wireless device charging.

A remote app enables drivers to check vehicle status and remotely lock/unlock, condition the cabin and schedule PHEV charging via their smartphone.

The Evoque is also now available with Cabin Air Purification Plus, said to be one of the most sophisticated interior air quality technologies in its class. Available as part of the optional Comfort Pack, or standard on the top grade, it works to reduce the level of allergens or particulates inside the vehicle.

A new Kvadrat wool blend fabric that’s 58% lighter than leather also arrives for a contemporary alternative.

Exterior updates are more subtle and include a new grille – already seen on other Range Rover models – plus slimmer pixel LED headlights on top-spec models and taillights that provide increased visibility and reduced glare for other road users. New exterior colours and flush door handles also debut.

Trim level and engine choices have been streamlined. Equipment grades now span four models: Evoque S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE and Autobiography.

Engines include latest petrols and diesels, all featuring new mild hybrid technology. The P300e plug-in hybrid is also carried over and gets updated battery chemistry that boosts official driving range from 38 to 39 miles while giving an improved real-world driving experience, with an expected electric range of up to 30 miles. CO2 emissions start from 31g/km and the P300e features rapid DC charging capability as standard, enabling a 0-80% recharge in as little as 30 minutes. Using a 7kW home charger, a 0-100% charge can be completed in around two hours.

An intelligent torque on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) system is available across most of the line-up and the Terrain Response 2 system, accessible through Pivi Pro, gives a choice of Eco, Comfort, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Dynamic and Automatic modes.

Prices for the updated Range Rover Evoque start from £40,080 and orders are open now.

Earlier this year, Jaguar Land Rover revamped its branding to just JLR and announced a new ‘House of Brands approach’. This sees the Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar names switch to brands in their own right, to “become proud creators of the world’s most desirable modern luxury automotive brands for the most discerning clients”. However, JLR has said the Land Rover brand will “remain a key part of the company’s DNA”.

The new approach was one of a raft of new announcements among JLR’s new plans to invest £15bn over five years in its factories, vehicles and technology as it aims to become an “electric-first, modern luxury carmaker by 2030”.
