New Advisory Fuel Rates from HMRC bring increases across the board

HMRC has published its Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs), effective from 1 September 2022.

Fuel pumps

Most AFRs have now been increased 1-3ppm from 1 September 2022

Announced as pump prices have dipped slightly from their record high, the new AFRs see petrol rates hike up 1ppm for smaller engines, 1ppm for midsize and 2ppm for larger engines.

Diesel rates increase by 1ppm for smaller and midsize engines and 3ppm for larger engines.

For LPG-fuelled vehicles, rates go up by 1ppm for larger engines.

Meanwhile, the Advisory Electricity Rate (AER) for reimbursing electric company car mileage remains at 5ppm despite rising energy prices. This follows the 25% increase from 4ppm in the 1 December 2021 rate.

The new tables are as follows (old rates in brackets):

Engine size Petrol – amount per mile LPG – amount per mile
1400cc or less 15 pence (14p) 9 pence (9p)
1401cc to 2000cc 18 pence (17p) 11 pence (11p)
Over 2000cc 27 pence (25p) 17 pence (16p)
Engine size Diesel – amount per mile
1600cc or less 14 pence (13p)
1601cc to 2000cc 17 pence (16p)
Over 2000cc 22 pence (19p)

The previous rates can be used for up to one month from the date the new rates apply. Hybrid cars are treated as either petrol or diesel cars for AFR purposes.
