National Highways launches major new safety campaign for holiday season

National Highways has launched a major new driver awareness campaign calling on motorists to plan their summer journeys as it warns of a seasonal surge in vehicle breakdowns.

The new T.R.I.P. checklist is based on four key principles to prevent vehicle breakdowns and reduce the number of collisions caused by fatigue

Its data for last summer reveals August saw the highest number of breakdowns across the year. Over July and August 2022, National Highways traffic officer patrols dealt with more than 21,000 breakdowns on motorways. Of these, more than a third (34%) were caused by tyre problems, vehicles running out of fuel, loss of power and engine issues.

It also warns that collisions involving fatigue are most common over the months of July and August with approximately one in 15 crashes involving fatigue.

Meanwhile, data shows that almost one out of four (23%) people agree checking tyre pressure is important but don’t know how to do it.

With millions expected to head off on their travels over the coming weeks, National Highways is calling on drivers to make sure they have a safe T.R.I.P. this summer by using its new journey planning checklist.

The new T.R.I.P. checklist is based on four key principles to prevent vehicle breakdowns and reduce the number of collisions caused by fatigue. These are:

  • Top–up. Fuel, oil and screen wash.
  • Rest. Take a rest break every two hours.
  • Inspect. Check tyre pressure and tread.
  • Prepare. Have a plan for all weather conditions.

Separate figures now out from the AA also warn of high levels of holiday traffic and breakdowns over the coming weeks.

Its research indicates some 16 million cars are expected on holiday trips in the UK this summer – and the organisation is warning that around a quarter of a million of those will potentially suffer a breakdown.

Its figures also suggest drivers who are likely to have a young family (25 to 34 years) and cars used primarily in cities are most prone to vehicle breakdowns. The AA’s summer driving advice is online here.
