Now in its sixth generation, the executive saloon will launch this summer to rival the new BMW 5 Series, while the estate is due later.

Powertrain line-up from launch in Europe will include a range of mild hybrid petrol and diesels and plug-in hybrids. Entry model will be the E200 204hp mild hybrid petrol featuring a 2.0-litre engine, followed by the E220d 197hp 2.0-litre mild hybrid diesel, also available with 4Matic four-wheel drive.

Plug-in hybrids from launch feature a 2.0-litre petrol, 129hp motor and larger 25kWh battery, giving an all-electric range of over 62 miles (100km) WLTP. The line-up includes the 230hp E300e and E300e 4Matic and the 280hp E400e 4Matic. More plug-in hybrids with diesel combustion engines will follow. The line-up won’t include fully electric models as these are taken care with the EQE range.

Design keeps the traditional classic saloon layout and draws in elements from the S-Class and EQ models, including flush-fitting door handles as an option and a gloss black surround that connects the new-look grille with the headlamps.

It sits on an updated version of the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform with a longer wheelbase that increases onboard space, particularly in the rear, while luggage capacity rises to 540 litres.

Technology includes a 12.3-inch instrument display and 14.4-inch portrait-style infotainment display, plus an optional ‘Superscreen’ infotainment set-up with an additional front passenger screen.

New third-party apps make their debut, including TikTok, Angry Birds, Webex and Zoom while a selfie and video camera is available as part of the MBUX Superscreen.

A new electronics architecture is used for the display screens and the MBUX infotainment system, improving speed and performance.

A Digital Vehicle Key is now available for the iPhone and Apple Watch, enabling users to lock and start the car. It can be shared by up to 16 people.

The new E-Class is also fitted with Level 4 technology to park and unpark fully automatically without a driver in markets regulated for its use.

First deliveries of the new E-Class saloon are due this autumn. Prices will be announced closer to launch but are expected to start from around £50,000.
