Large majority of truck drivers remain unconvinced by CPC training

Over 75% of respondents disagreed with the statement “Do you believe that the government's Driver CPC training initiative will make you a better, more informed driver?”

‘Professional training can produce smarter, safer and more economical drivers, however much of this typically lies in the delivery of the content rather than just the training content itself,’ said AA DriveTech Business Development director, Jason Vallint.

‘Whilst instructors may be knowledgeable, not all have the ability to impart their knowledge in a structured, informative and professional manner. It's a sad fact of life that the variable quality of courses on offer by the hundreds of suppliers involved has undermined the potential of Driver CPC,’ he added.

The exit polls conducted at the end of AA DriveTech courses paint a completely different picture though. Not only do the majority admit that they've learnt something new but many are eager to book another course, so that they get ahead of the game before the deadline for training completion approaches.

‘Although all Driver CPC courses have to be accredited by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training [JAUPT], the survey findings suggest few live up to delegates' expectations and subsequently they view the training community as having collectively failed them,’ he continued.

‘While the time old adage ‘you get what you pay for' is probably true in many cases, I would urge buyers of Driver CPC to consider quality ahead of price to avoid disappointment. There are several competent training providers out there, and I believe that AA DriveTech is one of those providing quality at an affordable price.

‘Companies and drivers should be more careful with their investment in Driver CPC – it's their time and money after all. A well designed and creatively presented course really can stimulate and develop drivers' knowledge and fine tune techniques for the benefit of all concerned, and does not need to break the bank. For those still sceptical, I look forward to welcoming them on one of our courses soon!’ he concluded.
