KGM signals start of new era with Torres SUV arrival

KGM Motors, previously SsangYong, has launched its Torres SUV in the UK as it powers ahead with a brand revamp.

The five-seat Torres SUV sits between the smaller Korando and larger Rexton

Priced from £34,995 and available in showrooms now, the five-seat family SUV sits between the smaller Korando and larger Rexton models to target evolving SUV buyer needs.

It’s part of the SUV and pickup maker’s revised UK model line-up following its recent corporate rebrand – and the first to feature the new ‘Powered by Toughness’ design philosophy. This adopts a “sleek and modern exterior”, rather than the “strong, practical lines” used for other models.

Built on a new platform designed for multiple drivetrains, it launches first with front-wheel drive models using a turbocharged 163hp 1.5-litre petrol engine seen in the Korando but delivering a 10% improvement in acceleration from standstill. It’s married up to a six-speed automatic transmission and available in two trim levels – the entry-level 2WD K30 from £34,995 and the higher-spec K40 from £37,995.

All-wheel drive models arrive later in the year in the higher-spec K40 trim only and priced from £39,995, while the line-up also gains the pure-electric Torres EVX this spring.

The towing capacity of Torres is up to 1,500kg with a braked trailer, and 750kg for an unbraked trailer. KGM also promises competitive approach and departure angles and the Torres comes with a trailer sway control function.

Equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital cluster and infotainment display. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, and front USB and Aux ports, accompanied by six cabin speakers.

The Torres also delivers a claimed best-in-class capacity load area, ranging from 703 to 1,662 litres and with a concealed space beneath the load floor.

Kevin Griffin, managing director of KGM UK, said: “Torres is the first to reinterpret our future design vision, which draws heavily on our unique heritage. Its launch marks an exciting, new era for design, performance and product with all models moving forward adhering to this new approach.

“The SUV market is continually expanding and subdividing, and with Torres, we are filling the gap between semi-medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and large SUVs such as Rexton. This move will create an additional segment in the market and open new opportunities for us as we continue to develop our product offering that adds value and originality.”
