Iveco and Hyundai unveil fuel cell large van at IAA in Hannover

Iveco Group and Hyundai Motor Company have unveiled the first Iveco eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle at the IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover.

The OEMs signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022, supporting their individual commitments on sustainability, and have since formed multiple joint working groups to explore ways of working on the development of electric vehicles and alternative propulsions.

They’ve already jointly unveiled a hydrogen-powered Iveco bus equipped with Hyundai’s fuel cell system and the new eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) shows a future vision of Iveco’s bestselling and longest production-running large van.

The working eDaily FCEV prototype is equipped with Hyundai’s 90kW hydrogen fuel cell system and a 190hp electric motor. Six tanks offer a combined storage capacity of 12kg of hydrogen while the battery pack comes from FPT Industrial, the powertrain brand of Iveco Group.

The GVW 7.2-tonne prototype has been tested in Europe, confirming a driving range of 350km (217 miles), maximum payload of 3 tonnes and a refuelling time within 15 minutes.

The new vehicle will complement the eDaily BEV, also launched at the IAA, enabling deliveries to be undertaken where long range with high payload is necessary.

A small series of FCEV vans based on the prototype will be rolled out for trial with selected customers by the end of next year.

The two firms will also use the slogan ‘Engineered by Iveco Group, powered by Hyundai’ to reflect their cooperation and are also examining other options, ranging from cross-selling products in selected worldwide regions to joint developments in vehicle automation and connectivity.

Additionally, Hyundai is also considering sourcing opportunities from FPT Industrial in the area of next-generation conventional powertrains for commercial vehicles.
