Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, commented: ‘Sat navs have got a great deal better in recent years – while we'd never suggest disposing of your paper maps altogether, or blindly relying on a sat nav for the entirety of your journey, we think trying to second-guess them can be both dangerous and frustrating!’

However, those who said they didn't trust their sat nav did say they knew it would get them there eventually.

Bower-Dyke commented: ‘We're past the point of people driving their cars into someone's pond because their sat nav told them to! It seems it's not just technology that's got better, but drivers have become more tech savvy too, but we're far from living in a world of driverless cars just yet!’

For the 51% who do trust their sat navs, many said they were a life-saver, removing the stress and anxiety of getting lost. And interestingly many respondents commented that they like the “non-judgemental” element of their robot navigator.

Bower-Dyke concluded: ‘I think these respondents are suggesting that a pre-recorded voice telling you it's recalculating the route is less stressful than being told by a significant other that you've missed the turn!’
