Free smart charging app could slash EV drivers’ costs

A free smart charging app that could drastically cut EV charging costs is now available from Tado.

The app is available for free in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain

The app allows motorists on certain types of tariffs to automatically charge their electric vehicles when energy prices are low. It could save an average of 30% on annual home charging costs for EVs, according to Tado, a European provider of smart thermostats and energy management solutions.

It’s able to charge electric vehicles from most major brands, including Tesla, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Škoda, SEAT, Land Rover and others. For some brands, such as Mercedes, Peugeot or Kia, a smart wallbox must also be installed and connected – those from Zaptec, Wallbox or Easee are compatible with the app.

The Smart Charging app reveals its full savings potential in combination with the aWATTar Hourly tariff from Tado or with hourly dynamic tariffs from other energy providers.

The app is available for free in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain. It can be downloaded now from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in German or English, with more languages to follow.
