Family cars take over from 4x4s as most popular used cars

By / 11 years ago / Latest News / No Comments

The fastest selling used car during August was the Ford B-MAX, with an average selling time of 25.5 days. This was followed in second place by Chevrolet’s Orlando (29.0 days) and third place was taken by the Ford Focus CC at 32.6 days. With six out of the ten quickest selling cars being family vehicles, the pattern has changed for the first time in several months.

Rupert Pontin, chief ear editor, commented: ‘Over the past six months we’ve seen 4x4s consistently take the most popular selling top spots – even at the beginning of summer when we expected the hot weather to boost sales of convertibles. This is probably the first month where the pattern is as we expected for the time of year, family cars are always going to be popular over the summer holiday period.

‘That’s not to say convertibles have totally missed out, they do take three out of the top 10 places again reflecting the time of year and the excellent weather that continued right throughout the summer.

‘The Nemo Multispace is proving to be a very popular choice – it’s been in or very close to the top 10 all year. What is most interesting is the fact that the Hyundai i30 is selling so well, and I think this reinforces the messages of value for money and high quality the brand has successfully pushed to the market.’

Looking to the worst performing cars, Mercedes Benz takes the slowest spot, with an average of 138.3 days to sell, with MG’s TF at 114.0 days and the Ford Streetka at 94.7 days.

Pontin added: ‘The Chrysler Ypsilon has now become a regular in the ten slowest selling cars, and there is no surprise to see it’s still struggling to find retail demand and identity in a crowded market. The CT200 is also struggling, but with poor image and low spec levels when pitched up against competitors. The Nissan LEAF will be one to watch – it is coming to the market in greater numbers but there is still distrust and low demand for electric vehicles of which I think the LEAF is an excellent one.’
