Škoda has announced details of the new Kodiaq large SUV, which arrives early in 2024 with extra space, a suite of new technologies and its first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Due for a full reveal in the autumn, the second-generation model will include two petrol and two diesel engines with power ranging from 150hp to 204hp.

Big news is the arrival of the range-topping plug-in hybrid version. This teams up a 150hp 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with an electric motor on the front axle along with a 25.7kWh battery. This gives an electric range of more than 62 miles (100km), which puts the Kodiaq PHEV in the 8% BiK bracket for 2024/5. The battery supports AC recharging at 11kW from wallboxes and charging points and can be charged at up to 50kW at DC fast-charging stations.

The line-up also includes a new entry-level 150hp 1.5 TSI petrol engine, which marks the debut of mild hybrid technology in the Kodiaq, and a 204hp TSI petrol with all-wheel drive. The two 2.0 TDI diesel units produce 150hp and 193hp respectively, the latter again with all-wheel drive.

All engines get a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox except for the plug-in hybrid, which comes solely with a six-speed DSG.

Built on an updated version of the MQB platform, the new Kodiaq gains a 61mm increase in length and a further increase in wheelbase. This delivers enhanced onboard space, especially for passengers in the third-seat row on seven-seat versions, who also benefit from increased headroom. Boot space rises 75 litres to 910 with the rear seats up on five-seat models and stands at 340 to 845 litres for the seven-seater.

Design has been overhauled too, giving a more distinctive look that includes a sculptural front-end, squared-off wheel arches, 17- to 20-inch wheels and second-generation full LED matrix headlights.

The interior has been completely redesigned and features a new concept with a touchscreen display of up to 12.9 inches, a head-up display, a gearshift lever on the steering column, a mix of manual and digital controls and a new centre console layout. There’s also a host of new Simply Clever features for Škoda afficionados, including a rear storage compartment with a cup holder and a dual Phone Box that provides cooling and simultaneous charging for two mobile phones.

A range of assistance systems will be available, including a new remote parking feature activated via an app and enhanced Crew Protect Assist and Emergency Assist, along with up to nine airbags.
