The move follows the departure of Alfred Rieck, formerly the president of Skoda China, after just seven months in the role.

‘We respect Alfred Rieck's decision and wish him the best in his future endeavors,’ said Opel Supervisory Board Chairman Steve Girsky. ‘Day in and day out, Duncan Aldred delivers clear proof that our business plan works and our attractive models are the key to success.’

Aldred first began his career with Vauxhall as an undergraduate at the Ellesmere Port plant in 1990 and held various positions in sales and marketing before his appointment as Vauxhall Retail sales director in February 2004.

He worked in Budapest as director, sales, marketing and aftersales for GM South East Europe before moving to Russelsheim, Germany, in April 2009 to take the role of sales operations director, GM Europe.

Aldred was appointed managing director of Vauxhall in January 2010.
