Use salary sacrifice to ‘complement’ company cars, says tax expert

Speaking at a recent ACFO fleet briefing held in Canary Wharf, Rees told attendees that an increasing number of employers are offering staff the opportunity to sacrifice part of their salary in return for a range of benefits that includes a car.

He commented: ‘We are seeing significant growth in businesses implementing salary sacrifice car arrangements and there is an impressive take-up rate for an optional benefit among the right population.’

However, he added: ‘I don’t see salary sacrifice car schemes overtaking company car schemes. I consider salary sacrifice as being much more about employers offering a mobility solution to staff.

‘Salary sacrifice works for employees for whom a company car is a “perk” and for the wider workforce who do not have access to company cars. Salary sacrifice is there to complement company car schemes and add to mobility solutions that are already in place.’
