Upgraded SEAT Leon gets new-gen plug-in hybrid and digital tech

SEAT has revamped its Leon family car with latest-generation plug-in hybrid and petrol engines alongside new digital technologies.

A favourite with fleets, the Leon hatch and estate remains a key model in SEAT’s line-up

The lower-medium hatch and estate remains a key model in the brand’s line-up and the revamped fourth-generation version continues its success.

On sale later this year, the Leon will be exclusively available with four-cylinder engines: either 1.5 TSI – in conventional petrol, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid guise – or a 2.0 TDI diesel.

The new-generation eHybrid plug-in hybrid packs in a new 150hp 1.5 TSI engine, 85kW electric motor and a larger 19.7kWh battery compared to the 13kWh pack before. Also seen in the revised Leon from performance brand Cupra as well as other Volkswagen Group models, it delivers a higher 204hp output, plus a longer electric-only range of more than 62 miles that ensures it qualifies for the 8% Benefit-in-Kind bracket in the current tax year.

The new battery also means that drivers can now charge up to 50kW on DC fast-chargers or at 11kW at home on an AC wallbox (previously 3.6kW).

Engine line-up also now includes an entry-level 1.5-litre TSI that replaces the previous 1.0 TSI and delivers 115hp of power and 220Nm of torque compared to 110hp and 200Nm before. It’s linked to a six-speed manual transmission. WLTP CO2 emissions are 120-132g/km with official fuel economy is 48.7-53.3mpg.

The model range also includes two eTSI 48V mild hybrid options in the form of 115hp and 150hp 1.5-litre petrols, exclusively combined with the seven-speed DSG transmission.

The Leon also gets tech upgrades in the exterior, with new optional matrix LED headlamps available for the first time in SEAT’s hatchback.

Inside, the Leon gains a 10.25-inch digital cockpit for the driver and a larger 10.4-inch infotainment system as standard or an option 12.9-inch screen, both with a retro-illuminated slider. It also now offers wireless fast-charging capabilities of up to 15W.

Designed, developed and produced in Barcelona at the brand’s Martorell facilities, the SEAT Leon will enter production this month. Prices and on-sale dates will be announced shortly.
