TfL plans for more 20mph limits in south London

Transport for London (TfL) is inviting Londoners to have their say on plans to introduce 40 miles (65km) of new 20mph speed limits in south London.

The project is part of the TfL’s commitment to lower the speed limit by 10mph on a further 87 miles of its road network by 2024

The new project covers roads in the Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley and Lambeth.

It follows local engagement late last year on plans to introduce 17 miles of new 20mph speed limit on TfL roads within the boroughs of Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey and Tower Hamlets.

It’s part of TfL’s commitment to lower the speed limit by 10mph on a further 87 miles (140km) of its road network by 2024.

Lower speed limits are a vital part of the Mayor of London’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate deaths and serious injury on the transport network and enable more walking and cycling in the capital.

Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner, said: “The facts are clear, a person hit by a vehicle at 20mph is five times less likely to be killed than at 30mph. We are determined to build a safer, greener London for everyone and the continued expansion of the 20mph programme on TfL roads is playing a vital role in making the capital’s roads safer for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.”

The new speed limits would be supported by updated signs and road markings and policed by recalibrated speed cameras – TfL would also work closely with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to drive compliance as part of an ongoing partnership. This year, 2022/23, MPS will enforce around 650,000 speeding offences, an increase of around 30% compared to the previous year.

Following implementation, TfL plans to carry out monitoring to determine whether further measures to reduce vehicle speeds are required.
