New Citroën C5 Aircross gets more space and EV options
Citroën has unveiled the second-generation C5 Aircross, complete with a bold new look, more space and its first-ever fully electric versions.
The new flagship for the French brand, the family SUV benefits from parent firm Stellantis’s STLA-Medium platform while incorporating styling from the C5 Aircross Concept unveiled in autumn 2024 at the Paris Motor Show.
The new platform delivers larger dimensions, with a longer wheelbase to enhance passenger space for record rear-seat roominess, as well as one of the best boot volumes in its category, with 651 litres of space, and up 1,668 litres with the rear seats folded. Vitally, those capacities are the same for the plug-in hybrid and electric versions. It also comes with a 75-litre compartment under the boot floor to store the charging cable for EV versions.
The C5 Aircross’s practicality is further boosted by 40/20/40 split and adjustable rear seat backrests, a luggage cover split into two sections for easy access to the boot, and the availability of a motorised tailgate for hands-free opening and closing.
The switch to the new platform also enables the arrival of all-electric versions alongside plug-in hybrid and 48V mild hybrid models.
Two fully electric versions will be available: a 210hp Standard Range combined with a 73kWh battery for a WLTP range of 323 miles, and a 230hp Extended Range combined with a 97kWh battery with a WLTP range of 422 miles.
These feature three driving modes and a three-stage regenerative braking system. Depending on the model, a heat pump is fitted as standard.
An 11kW three-phase charger also comes as standard, and from 2026, customers will be able to specify an optional 22kW three-phase bi-directional charger for faster charging times of between 20% and 80%. The C5 Aircross can also charge at up to 160kW at a DC rapid charger.
Charging times for the 210hp Standard Range stand at six hours 45 minutes from a 7.4kW single-phase AC charger, four hours 30 minutes from an 11kW three-phase AC charger, and 30 minutes on a 160kW DC rapid charger.
For the 230hp Extended Range with the larger battery, these rise to eight hours 55 minutes from a 7.4kW single-phase AC charger, six hours 30 minutes from an 11kW three-phase AC charger, and 27 minutes from a 160kW DC rapid charger.
The plug-in hybrid version combines a 150hp four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with a 125hp electric motor, powered by a 21kWh battery located under the floor in the centre of the vehicle, for a combined output of 195hp. The electric motor is integrated into the new seven-speed ë-DCS7 dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The two engines can operate together or separately, depending on driving conditions and the driver’s needs, and there are three driving modes available.
Provisional all-electric range stands at 53 miles – 33% more than the previous C5 Aircross – while the larger 55-litre fuel tank gives it a total range of 403 miles on the motorway.
The Hybrid 48V version combines a new-generation 136hp three-cylinder 1.2-litre turbo engine, with a 12hp electric motor directly integrated into the new six-speed ë-DCS6 dual-clutch automatic gearbox and powered by a 0.9kWh battery located under the passenger’s seat. It comes with a range of more than 559 miles (WLTP combined cycle) and can be driven up to 50% of the time in electric-only mode in urban settings.
Citroën says fuel consumption is around 15% lower than a non-hybrid petrol model and 4% lower than the previous-generation C5 Aircross Hybrid 145.
The new C5 Aircross also gains the brand’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions for a ‘magic carpet’ ride while the ‘C-Zen Lounge’ cabin, which is designed as a ‘cocoon’ and features the new Citroën Advanced Comfort seats, comes with the ergonomic Cascade touchscreen, said to be the largest yet fitted to a Stellantis car, and an enhanced head-up display as an option.
First deliveries of the new C5 Aircross start in the second half of 2025, with UK prices and specifications announced in the run-up to the launch.
