Mazda2 supermini axed as focus shifts to Mazda2 Hybrid

Mazda has confirmed that its Mazda2 ICE supermini is exiting the UK and Europe, leaving the Mazda2 Hybrid as the brand’s sole B-segment model.

The Mazda2 engine line-up consists of the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine with either 75 or 90hp, both come with Mazda’s M Hybrid mild-hybrid system on manual models

The petrol supermini, a firm favourite with fleets and private drivers for over two decades due to its frugal running and high levels of equipment, has ceased production for Europe.

The model is now on runout and can no longer be specified from new although dealers still have some stock.

The current generation, launched in 2015 and facelifted twice since, has remained a popular choice – over 4,000 sold last year, for example.

The focus now shifts to the Mazda2 Hybrid; a rebadged version of the Toyota Yaris introduced under the carmakers’ long-term collaboration to provide a full hybrid option for Mazda customers. First launched in 2022, it was recently updated with stronger Mazda styling and the brand’s familiar grade structure.

A spokesperson for Mazda said: “As we move towards increased electrification of our cars, the Mazda2 Hybrid meets consumer demand in the B-segment and is a step in our journey to ensure all our cars have some form of electrification by 2030.

“The current Mazda2 Hybrid has a greater element of Mazda exterior design personality and we are ensuring customers in the supermini segment still have the choice of a Mazda in a sector that has seen several key models disappear recently.”

The petrol-powered Mazda2 is the latest supermini to be killed off, following the 2023 departure of the Ford Fiesta, amid changing consumer tastes and the shift to EVs.
