BVRLA: 15% rise in Congestion Charge is 'tax rise on essential business users'

TfL has announced a consultation on a number of changes to the Congestion Charge, including raising the daily rate 15% in a move to ensure Congestion Charge remains a deterrent to unnecessary journeys in central London.

In response, BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney said: ‘This 15% increase in the daily charge is completely unjustified and is in effect a tax rise on essential business users who have no choice but to drive in central London. It is illogical that London cabs are exempt from the congestion charge but rental vehicles are not.’

The BVRLA also pointed to its own recent research, which shows that the average rental car is cleaner and safer than the average privately owned vehicle. The research also shows that car rental customers are likely to own fewer vehicles and have more sustainable travel habits.
