Black back at the top for used car market

Black has replaced white as the favourite used car among UK buyers, accounting for more than one in six (17%) of used cars sold at Manheim in 2017.

Neutral colours may make up the top five used car colour choices but Cox Automotive says red is a mainstay of the market.

Also back as the colour of choice for new car buyers, black bumped white into second place in Manheim’s auction lanes last year, followed by silver, blue and grey.

The top 10 was completed by red, green, yellow, orange and beige, with Philip Nothard, head of external relations at Cox Automotive commenting: “While neutral colours continue to dominate the top three, dealers shouldn’t dismiss brights. Red will always be a ‘love it or hate it’ colour, but it’s proved a mainstay in the top 10 for the last 20 years.”

The data from Manheim parent firm Cox Automotive also showed that the Ford Fiesta continued its reign as the UK’s favourite used car for both the wholesale and consumer side of the automotive market (tallying with data from the SMMT which showed the model also dominated the new car market for 2017), followed by the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa.
