Open for sales from June priced from £60,980, the PHEV variants join the petrol and diesels unveiled earlier this spring for the sixth-generation Saloon and Avant estate.

The new e-hybrid quattro models build on the strengths of their TFSI e predecessors with increased efficiency and performance thanks to a larger battery, along with smart recuperation strategy and intelligent hybrid management.

While two variants will be on offer elsewhere in Europe, the UK gets just one PHEV model. This combines a 252hp 2.0-litre TFSI engine with a 143hp electric motor, giving total power of 299hp and 450Nm of torque, and combined with a seven-speed S Tronic transmission, Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive and standard all-wheel steering. Acceleration from 0 to 62mph takes 6.0 seconds and official top speed stands at 155mph.

It’s fed by a high-voltage battery delivering 25.9kWh (net 20.7kWh); up by around 45% compared with previous generations. The larger-capacity battery means that the saloon can travel for up to 64 miles under electric power alone, and the Avant for up to 63 miles.

At the same time, maximum AC charging power has been boosted from the previous two-phase 7.4 kW to three-phase 11 kW, delivering a full recharge to 100% in as little as 2.5 hours depending on the respective infrastructure.

Recuperation performance has also been improved. Drivers can choose from three levels of recuperation intensity in electric driving mode using paddles on the steering wheel.

Two operating modes are available: EV and hybrid. In EV mode, the plug-in hybrid models run solely on electric power, while in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level as needed to save enough electrical energy for later use. In addition to the automatic hybrid mode, the desired charge level can be individually selected using a digital slider.

The new e-hybrid quattro models are available with Sport, S line and Edition 1 specification options. These are priced at £60,980, £63,780 and £68,680 respectively while the Avant versions are priced £1,950 higher.

The PHEV versions join the 2.0 TDI diesel and 2.0 TFSI petrol models already unveiled.

Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture that’s also used for the A5 – the A4’s successor – and the new Q5, the new A6 Avant and Saloon are engineered to set new standards in design and aerodynamics and also feature the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture to deliver advanced connectivity, updates and digitalisation features.

UK sales begin in early June with first customer deliveries due late summer.
