4x4s remain up but values on petrol variants struggling, says Glass’s
Prestige car editor Richard Crosthwaite says that the Audi R8 is top of this month’s hot list, and performing especially well are the 5.2 models, most notably the Spyder. Availability is short, and values are strong particularly on cars up to two years of age.
Crosthwaite adds that the 4×4 sector continues to perform well, with values remaining largely flat or slightly up.
He comments: ‘The sector remains a highly sought after one, and it is not hard to see why Bentley, Jaguar and Maserati are to join the party before too long. I understand the reasons behind this move, but with Audi, BMW and Mercedes all bringing yet more products to this segment over the next few years, at what point will saturation come?’
He also warns that values for petrol 4x4s are currently struggling, adding that the export market has cooled somewhat of late and although supply of petrol product in the UK market is small, it is still generally larger than the demand.
Also under pressure are cabriolet values, which have started to make a downward move a month or two later than normal due to the excessive sunshine we’ve experienced this summer.
The model that finds itself most susceptible to the “out of season” months is often the TT Roadster, and this year looks to be no exception, values are under greater pressure than on most soft tops.
Finally, Glass’s warns that there is a current glut (even more so than usual) of average or poor condition cars at auction.
Crosthwaite continued: ‘With the influx of “straight to auction” September part exchanges to follow, this is becoming something of an issue. These cars are often seen revolving through the auction halls and a realistic price drop now is the best course of action to wash them out of the system (the first loss is often the best). There is little doubt that the gap between the “ready to retail” car and the poor condition one in valuation terms has never been greater.’
