Marking the 40th anniversary of the event, this year’s awards saw the SUV fend off competition from the Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq to win the Family SUV category, before beating 20 other category winners to be named as the overall Car of the Year.

The judges proclaimed the Volvo XC40 is “a staggeringly good SUV for any family, taking comfort, quality and safety to another level, all at a reasonable price”.

The judges also said the winning D4 R Design XC40 model had been proven to emit less NOx than plenty of petrols in independent tests along with offering low CO2 output.
