Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet 2.0 TDI GT

So I’m afraid the sodden test week I endured meant the roof didn’t come down once. What I can tell you is that with the roof up the Golf is well insulated and cosy.

It also looks good with the roof up, the fabric roof looking less clunky than some of these folding metal hard tops that some rivals use. I’ve looked at pictures and can confirm the Golf looks good with the roof down, too.

Roof aside, this is pure bread and butter Golf, or as near to bread and butter as you can get with a near-£26,000 price tag. Our test model was in range-topping GT guise which brings nice alloy wheels and sportier trim, while under the bonnet was the 2.0-litre 140bhp TDI diesel engine with the full house of BlueMotion Technology fuel saving devices.

They all appear to work well, as combined fuel economy is 62.8mpg while CO2 emissions are comfortably low at 119g/km.

On the road the Golf rides well, with that positive four-square Germanic stance, while the familiar TDI unit bungs out plenty of low down torque for instant shove. Road and wind noise is well suppressed for a cabriolet, while chassis flex is also well controlled.

 

Verdict

The Golf is pretty much the default user-chooser choice, and I’m sure it will remain the case in Cabriolet form thanks to its strong badge appeal and great looks. I just can’t help wondering if £26k for a Golf is a bit rich.
