Volkswagen has revealed initial details for its updated Arteon line-up, which gains a Shooting Brake model and plug-in variant for the first time.

The five-seater fastback launched in 2017 as an indirect replacement to the Passat CC and the latest changes, previewed in June, will help drive its appeal.

This includes the PHEV powertrain but also the new estate version, which is expected to make up the majority of sales in the UK, helped by a relatively small premium of as little as £800 and prices starting from £37,640 OTR in the first wave. Fuel and CO2 figures are also very broadly similar to the hatch.

While the new eHybrid plug-in hybrid model is expected to be of key interest to fleets, the initial models on sale will only be offered in 2.0-litre TDI or TSI, covering both bodystyles and with a choice of three trim levels; a wider range follows in the coming weeks and months and will also include the entry-level 1.5-litre 150hp TSI engine with six-speed manual transmission and the range-topping 320hp Arteon R with 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The 150hp 2.0 TDI in the first wave will offer WLTP CO2 from 127g/km with WLTP combined fuel economy up to 58.9mpg. The 190hp 2.0 TSI meanwhile is rated from 168g/km and up to 38.2mpg. Both are offered with seven-speed DSG.

The TSI is available in Elegance or R-Line trims while the TDI is available as an SE Nav, Elegance or R-Line variant.

The SE Nav build on the outgoing SE entry-level model and brings Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, while the Shooting Brake will be equipped with keyless entry. SE Nav cars all gain 3Zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and an 8-inch Discover Navigation system with the MIB3 infotainment platform, including wireless App-Connect. Exterior and interior features include 17-inch alloy wheels; LED headlights and tail lights, with an 8-speaker sound system, and driver’s seat with 6-way electric adjustment. The SE Nav will only be offered with the Arteon at first; the Arteon Shooting Brake in SE Nav will become available at a later date.

Next up is the Elegance trim; focused on luxury and carried over from the outgoing model along with the R-Line. Elegance-trim models get 18-inch alloy wheels, and keyless entry across both body styles, a rear-view camera and Travel Assist – Volkswagen’s adaptive cruise control and lane keeping system. Inside the cabin, there’s a leather-wrapped capacitive steering wheel with touch controls, heated seats, and voice control, while drivers can also choose between driving profiles.

The Arteon R-Line puts the focus on striking styling, with 19-inch alloys as standard, dual trapezoidal exhaust tips and redesigned R-Line body kit. A sunroof is standard on all R-Line cars, while the Shooting Brake gains a standard-fit panoramic sunroof. Both cars also receive rear tinted glass and interior ambient lighting with 30 colour options.

Driver safety features across the range include adaptive cruise control, 3Zone climate control, digital cockpit, LED headlights, Wireless App Connect, and the We Connect Plus package of live data services for the navigation system.

Pricing for the first wave of Arteon models starts at £35,435 OTR for the hatch in SE Nav 2.0 TDI 150hp 7-spd DSG guise, with the Shooting Brake variant to arrive later. At the top of the initial range, the R-Line 2.0 TDI 150hp 7-spd DSG is priced from £38,255 OTR for the hatch and £39,055 for the Shooting Brake.
