Vauxhall has revealed its new Astra Sports Tourer estate, which includes a plug-in hybrid powertrain from launch along with petrol and diesel models.

Unveiled just weeks after the next-gen Astra hatchback opened for orders, the Sports Tourer is the brand’s first estate to feature the new Vauxhall Vizor front-end – already seen on the Mokka, Grandland and Crossland – and its first electrified estate.

Built on the same EMP2 architecture as a number of Stellantis models, it’s 60mm shorter than the previous-generation Astra Tourer, thanks to the short front overhang, and with a 57mm longer wheelbase compared to the new hatchback, at 2,732mm.

Diesel and petrol-engined variants get up to 608 litres of boot space with the rear seats upright, and up to 1,634 litres when folded. For plug-in hybrid variant, these stand at 548 litres and 1,574 litres respectively.

The 40:20:40-split rear seats also fold completely flat – making it easier to load long and bulky items – and a loading height of 600mm also enhances practicality.

Petrol and diesel versions can also be specified with the optional ‘Intelli-Space’ feature; basically a moveable load floor that can be easily adjusted to high and low positions with one hand and tilted at a 45-degree angle. The retractable boot storage cover can also be stowed in both positions, in contrast to rivals.

The Intelli-Space function also enables the tyre repair and first aid kits to be stored in underfloor compartments that can be accessed from the boot or rear passenger seating area, without needing to fully unpack the boot.

Engine line-up includes the 225hp plug-in hybrid powertrain that also joins the existing 180hp unit in the Astra hatchback next year and fitted as standard with an eight-speed automatic. Petrol and diesel units range from 110hp to 130hp and are married up to a six-speed manual.

The interior features the Pure Panel digital cockpit debuted on models such as the Mokka and including a 10-inch digital touchscreen. Importantly, settings such as climate control can still be selected directly via physical switches below the console for ease of access. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all models and, as with the hatchback, the Sports Tourer features ultra-ergonomic seats certified by Germany’s Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR).

Full specifications and pricing for the Astra Sports Tourer will be announced when order books open early next year. Deliveries start early summer 2022.
