Third-gen Hyundai i20 puts focus on new styling, safety and mild hybrids

Hyundai’s new i20 supermini has been revealed, introducing the line-up’s first mild hybrids along with a styling first for Europe.

The third-gen Hyundai i20 launches this spring

Due to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the third-generation model becomes the carmaker’s first car in Europe to use its new ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language that will be rolled out across other models. It’s also longer, lower and wider than before, with a 10mm longer wheelbase, enabling a 25-litre increase in boot space to 351 litres overall.

The new model also heralds the i20’s first use of 48-volt mild hybrid powertrains. The full line-up in Europe offers an entry-level 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol with five-speed manual and a 1.0 T-GDi with 100 or 120hp, either with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The lower-powered T-GDi offers the mild hybrid powertrain as an option while it’s standard on the 120hp variant. However, the UK line-up will solely offer the 1.0-litre T-GDi with 100hp in mild hybrid guise. Helped by the mild hybrid set-up and a 4% weight reduction compared to its predecessor plus standard Idle Stop and Go, the new i20 will offer a 3-4% reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, although official figures are yet to be announced.

On-board equipment includes two new 10.25-inch screens, consisting of a digital cluster and a navigation touchscreen, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now offered wirelessly and there’s a wireless charging pad. The i20 also becomes the first Hyundai model in Europe to offer a premium Bose audio system as an option. Drivers can also access a range of connected car services such as Hyundai LIVE Services, as well as remote features via the Bluelink smartphone app and a free five-year subscription.

Hyundai also promises class-leading safety and the SmartSense safety package brings a range of new features, including Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Lane Following Assist and Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist Warning plus an upgraded Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist.

i20 pricing and full spec details will be revealed prior to its arrival this spring.
