TfL invites views on expanded 20mph limits

Transport for London (TfL) is asking for views on plans to reduce speed limits across all its remaining roads in Westminster by spring 2022.

Data shows if you are hit by car at 20mph you are five times less likely to be fatally injured than at 30mph

The move would see speed limits on almost all TfL roads in the borough reduced to 20mph and comes after Westminster Council introduced the same speed limit on all its roads in the borough in 2020.

The plans support the Vision Zero commitment to eliminate death and serious injury on London’s roads.

Data shows if you are hit by car at 20mph you are five times less likely to be fatally injured than at 30mph and in March 2020, TfL introduced a 20mph speed limit on all of its roads within the congestion charging zone.

The latest changes would bring a reduced 20mph speed limit on 13km of roads within Westminster, including on Marylebone Road, Vauxhall Bridge Road and Edgware Road between the A40 and St. John’s Wood Road.

TfL would also raise tables at six existing pedestrian crossings locations on roads with newly lowered speed limits, reducing danger to people walking and increasing compliance with the new speed limit.

And there would be new road signs throughout to ensure that all drivers are fully aware of the new speed limit, while speed cameras will be recalibrated.

TfL is asking people to have their say on the proposed changes. The consultation is available on the TfL website at tfl.gov.uk/speed-westminster and also seeks views on making the temporary 30mph limit on the A40 Westway and temporary 20mph limits on Park Lane northbound and Grosvenor Road permanent.

The survey will be open until 18 August.
