Robust domestic demand drives UK car production
To date, 530,505 new cars have been built so far this year, although the figure is 1.4% down on the same period in 2014, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported.
Production for the domestic market was up 19.4% in the first four months of the year. In contrast the export figure fell 7.0%
For April, the number of cars produced for British customers rose 11.1% to 29,930 units, although the export figure fell 7.6% to 98,382.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “UK car production has escalated in recent years and continues to perform steadily in 2015. Manufacturers across the country are poised to see yet more growth following multi-billion pound investments and, providing global markets perform well, output is on track to reach record levels in the next few years.”
