Road Test: Hyundai Bayon

Hyundai’s entry-level SUV appeals as it’s an attractive value package, says Martyn Collins.

Hyundai is a revitalised brand, not scared to do things its own way – as can be seen in the unique sense of style of its latest models. Outside, the Bayon has sharply detailed flanks, a distinctive nose with its broad grille, plus wide and narrow DRL (daytime running) lights. At the back, there are arrow-shaped brake lights linked by a thin red line to emphasise this Hyundai’s width.

Inside, the Bayon feels like the latest i20 supermini, which isn’t a surprise as it’s based on this car. Highlights include the 10.25-inch infotainment display and standard TFT instruments.

The i20 is a roomy hatch and the Bayon is the same – especially in the back. The only disappointment is the hard, scratchy plastics used throughout.

We’ve got the mid-spec Premium trim, expected to be the most popular choice for fleet – although SE Connect and Ultimate trims are also available. Two engines are on offer in the Bayon, a 100hp, or the 120hp version of the 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder petrols that we have here, combined with a 48V mild hybrid system. The result is consumption and emissions up to 53.3mpg and 121g/km.

Smooth and punchy sum this engine up, combined with the clever, if slightly notchy, standard six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed Dual Clutch auto is available as an option). I say clever, as the manual is fitted with a drive-by-wire electronically controlled clutch. It’s called the eClutch and I couldn’t tell any difference – but it can disconnect the engine automatically for better efficiency on the motorway.

On the road, despite the 17-inch wheels, the ride is impressively refined. The steering is precise, there’s plenty of grip and the handling is tidy. But within the sector, a Ford Puma mght be a better choice if you’re looking for a dynamic drive.

Nonetheless, the Bayon is striking to look at, well equipped and practical. A standard five-year, unlimited mileage warranty brings peace of mind too.
