New app to optimise electric range for Volvo and Polestar 2 in latest OTA update

A new app that enables Volvo and Polestar 2 electric car drivers to optimise their range is being rolled out in a major over-the-air update.

The Range Assistant app helps drivers keep track of the available range of their pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge or Polestar 2 and optimise it through smart energy management

Released in beta version, the Range Assistant app helps drivers keep track of the available range of their pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge or Polestar 2 and optimise it through smart energy management and advice on driving style from an efficiency perspective. It also includes an Eco Climate mode that allows the driver to reduce demand on the battery from the climate system as desired.

It’s being deployed on both models’ built-in Android-powered operating system via a latest OTA update from the two brands; it will also be installed from the start of production on the Volvo C40 Recharge.

The full release app will follow later and will include additional features, such as coaching drivers with smart and easy-to-follow recommendations on how to adjust their driving style and speed to maximise the car’s range.

“Through in-house development of software and over-the-air updates, we can constantly improve our cars and make sure that your electric Volvo stays fresh,” said Sanela Ibrovic, head of connected experience at Volvo Cars. “The Range Assistant app is a great example of how quick development and deployment of new features can improve the Volvo customer experience every day.”

Other features and updates in the latest software release include further improvements to the safety systems, new information about cold climate impact on battery range and a new battery preconditioning function linked to Google Maps, along with various bug fixes.

“The connected nature of Polestar 2 means we can continue developing new features and improving existing attributes on a continual basis, sending updates to customers regularly,” said Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath.

“Since our first update late in 2020 we have released several key software and feature upgrades that have improved range, efficiency, connectivity and the driving experience. The latest package delivers some of our customers’ favourite wish-list items.”

The roll-out of the latest Volvo/Polestar software update has started in all global markets. Volvo is also planning to implement OTA updates for more models and markets.
