Promoted as part of Clean Air Day, the trials are being run by LPG supplier Autogas, which says the fuel can offer significant environmental improvements, in particular to councils and businesses looking to comply with forthcoming clean air zones.

The firm’s data indicates that vehicles running on LPG produce 99% fewer particulates than diesel or petrol models, 80% less NOx than diesels and 7% less CO2 than petrol vehicles.

LPG vehicles can also offer cost-saving benefits – Autogas says Anglesey council is saving an estimated £100,000 per year in fuel costs from its fleet of 80 LPG vans – and have the support of a network of more than 1,300 refuelling stations around the UK.

“Clean Air Day is a great way to raise awareness about air quality issues but the air quality problem requires a fundamental shift in attitudes and strategy in order to solve it in the long-term,” said Holly Jago, general manager, Autogas. “Councils are under extreme pressure to deliver immediate improvements and by inviting them to trial our range of LPG powered vehicles, they can see for themselves just how easy it is to make a dramatic improvement to their fleet emissions.”
