The new site, 10 minutes from Newcastle Airport, means the company is now present at 14 of the UK’s busiest airports, and joins other major sites including London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

The firm runs a total of 400 branches worldwide – including in Europe, Canada and South America – through franchises, with the UK marked out as the market with the most branches.

Will Wynter, franchisee development manager, said: “The milestone shows how far our brand has come and how attitudes towards road emissions have changed. Our customers are passionate about reducing emissions and it’s fitting that the new branch will be launched in the North East, a region where we aren’t currently based. Newcastle, in particular, is an area that is championing best practice in road emissions, so it’s a natural fit for us.”

The company also claims to have become the first carbon neutral rental firm last year through a scheme to offset total carbon emissions. For every car hire, Green Motion donates £1.25 to deforestation projects in the Amazon Rainforest and has raised thousands of pounds to date.
