The recall affects the F-150, F-250 and Lincoln Blackwood produced from 1997 to 2004.

The problem has affected models sold in cold-weather states where a particular type of grit used to de-ice the roads has led to the metal straps holding up the gas tanks rusting. This has caused the tanks to fall off and catch fire.

Ford has said it is aware of eight fires, with three having involved the rest of the truck, leading to first and second-degree burns for one person.

The carmaker added that it will notify affected owners in mid-September. Vehicles will need to taken to the local dealers who will repair them free of charge.
