Roughly the same size as its predecessor, the all-new version of the seven-seat MPV was previewed with a concept at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and brings a new design, with features seen on the Fiesta and the Focus such as the trapezoidal grille and slim headlamp design.

Inside, the S-MAX has been designed to offer a ‘dynamic sanctuary’ with more storage options along with padded materials and a driver-focused cockpit. The S-MAX also heated and cooled Ford Multi-Contour Seats with an Active Motion massage function.

To aid practicality, there’s a power folding feature for the second and third row seats – dubbed Easy-Fold, the system enables each rear seat to be folded flat from a push-button control panel and is said to be a segment first. Easy-Entry second row seats provide one touch access to third row seating. In total there are 32 seating and loadspace combinations according to the brand.

Underpinning the new model is the new CD4 platform, which will also be used for forthcoming models including the Mondeo, and is said to bring a class-leading driving experience, enhanced by Ford's new integral link rear suspension.

The new S-MAX also marks the European debut of Ford’s Adaptive Front Steering, which is designed to make vehicles easier to manoeuvre at low speeds and in tight spaces. At higher speeds, the new technology will help make the vehicle more agile and fun to drive.

Further technologies include Ford's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, offered on the for S-MAX for the first time, and Torque Steer Compensation and Active Nibble Compensation to cancel out unwanted feedback, forces and vibration.

The S-MAX will also be the first Ford globally to feature Ford Dynamic LED Headlamps with Glare-Free Highbeam that maintain maximum illumination without distracting other road users. And the introduction of Ford's Pre-Collision Assist technology is also billed as a first for the segment and the S-MAX will for the first time be offered with the Hands-Free Tailgate.

Diesel engine CO2 engine emissions will be reduced by an anticipated seven per cent, with options including a 120PS 2.0-litre TDCi with six-speed manual transmission and a revised 150PS and 180PS 2.0-litre TDCi with manual or PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Active Thermal Management System improves warm-up times to reach peak efficiency faster and reduce CO2 emissions.
